Surveillance technology as evidence

Last time i visited my aunt, i saw a strange picture of her on her counter. I took a closer look at it, and i realized it was a picture of her making an illegal turn at a stoplight. It was actually a really funny picture because she looked like she had no idea what she was doing. This picture was taken by one of the cameras that you see at stoplights that help law enforcement give out tickets. I researched more information on these stoplight video cameras. These help law enforement officials give out traffic citations wusing evidence of the surveillance technology rather than witnesses and citing the person, going by memory instead of eveidence to give out the citation. This has also helped law enforement to focus on patrolling more important things rather than consuming their time chasing after traffic violators. The cameras take care of the taffic violaters while the police can focus on patrolling and stopping more serious crimes such as robbery, and violent offenses, or public disturbances. Although it is very helpful to law enforement, it upsets a lot of motorists. The motorists loose the ability to discuss the situation with an officer, and explain why they did what they did. An example could be that a driver went through a red light because the light just turned red and it would have been dangerous to slam on the brakes right when they saw the light turn red. A lot also arugue this may be a violation of privacy. It could also be a good thing because it causes people to drive more safely knowing that there is a camera watching them that can send out a ticket showing evidence.

Media Diet

This Media Diet project has made realize how much I am exposed to the media everyday. For 5 days in a row i wrote down when i watched TV, went on internet sites, read books or magazines. Everyday that i recorded i went on facebook and watched TV. I limited my time on the internet because of all the homework that i had, but everyday I spent about an hour on facebook, and about 20 minutes on the SCU website checking my email. On day one, I read the People magazine at the gym, and i also read my Spanish textbook. I rarely ever read books unless i have to for school. The show that I watched on TV was Jersey shore and LAW and Order SVU. Day 2 I also read another magazine at the gym, and watched Law and Order SVU (I watched SVU every night before bed except on Day 3.) Day 3 I also went on my computer for about an hour and a half for facebook and to check email. Also i watched the Goodmorning America 7 o clock news with my roomate before going to school. On Day 4 i was exposed to my usual daily media consumption except i also watched the move "The Town" which I enjoyed. Day 5 i did the usual hour and a half f internet use, read a magazine at the gym and watched SVU law and order. My daily media consumption was consistent for the most part because i have a set daily rountine schedule, but on average I probably spent about 5 hours a day reading, watching TV, and using the internet.

Suveillance Technology and Businesses

There are many companies that produce surveillance technology. You often see security alarm stickers on people's windows to help keep people from intruding. An example is ADT. ADT is a popular security systems brand that helps create surveillance systems for small businesses. I think this is interesting how busnesses help out other businesses. Having good effective security systems helps reduce risks that businesses can face everyday. Security systems include security cameras, digital recorders, monitors, remote viewing, touch creen systems, and network video solutions. Surveillance technology has come a long way.

Abuse of Surveillance Technology

In my first blog I mentioned how surveillance technology can be used for good things such as catching criminals, preventing burglaries, etc., but it can also be abused. Privacy can be a huge issue. There have been complaints about the government listening into people's personal phone calls or even hiding cameras. Even using surveillance can risk leaking out important information that others should not find out. A lot of surveillance even violates people's right to privacy. Bussinesses must be careful with their curveillance technology to make sure it does not violate someone's privacy rights or there could be conseqences.

Importance of Surveillance cameras

My topic is surveillance technology. What comes to mind when I think of this are video cameras. I also think of this show that I once watched called “Wild Police Videos.” This show featured clips of film from surveillance cameras that were placed in police cars, liquor stores, and other stores. There was one clip that showed a police officer pulling over a driver. When the policeman went over to the car, the suspect started shooting at him and drove off. There was another clip of a man robbing a liquor store at gun point. The sales clerk that was being robbed pulled out a gun and had a shoot off with the robber. Thanks to the surveillance cameras, in both cases, the suspects on tape were caught and arrested. These surveillance camera video clips show how important it is to have surveillance technology for better safety in society. It is very important for businesses for robbery and theft prevention. Even at my old job working at a restaurant, one of my co-workers was fired because she was caught on camera stealing a cell phone and money from the register. Investing in surveillance technology is important for companies, and essential for some, such as a bank.
